Two-Story Great Room

How do I begin the process of transforming people’s homes? It starts with the interview process. In the initial interview I look to uncover the personal likes and dislikes of each person involved—including children and spouses—as well as the function of the room. I make an assessment of the space to see if anything needs to be changed, whether large or small. From there I establish the furniture floor plans, and a plan and drawings for built-ins. That leads directly to selecting the furniture.

To speak of the complexity: When people think about designing or decorating their home, they usually concern themselves with furniture and fixtures, fabrics and treatments, color and physical dimensions. Of course all of those elements are important. But there is so much more. Certainly, by paying attention to the physical elements everything is pulled together, and a cohesive, functional space is created. But, will you have the space that not only speaks to you, but in fact is you? Does it reflect not just your tastes, but also your inner self? Your essence? Dare I ask, “Your soul?”

I know; that’s a little heavy, and more than just a bit within the realm of woo-woo. But it is a realm upon which I rely for every project—large or small. It is the special element that I bring to the project. If you desire, call it an X-Factor. That unknown something that turns marvelous into spectacular. Transforms great into exquisite. Transcends perfect to find magic.

Long time readers of this newsletter may have wondered over the years, “Just what does Kathy mean by The Spirit in Design?” The answer is at once simple and complex. Simply, it’s an unspoken feeling conveyed by the space and what is contained within it. No doubt you have experienced it yourself. Think of the last time you walked into a room and immediately felt a reaction, a feeling, perhaps a sense of…something. You may have felt calm, uptight, or excited. Or, maybe you experienced an impression of warmth or of a chill, or a draft. Perhaps you sensed…what? Love? Anger? Something. That is The Spirit in Design.
